Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc primarily engages in the operation of a gold mine. It also explores for and develops mineral properties for precious metals. The company holds 64% interest in the Blanket Mine, a gold mine located in Matabeleland South Province, Zimbabwe. It also has an agreement to purchase 100% ownership in the Maligreen project, a brownfield gold exploration project located in Gweru mining district in the Zimbabwe Midlands. The company was formerly known as Caledonia Mining Corporation and changed its name to Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc in March 2016. Caledonia Mining Corporation Plc was incorporated in 1992 and is headquartered in Saint Helier, Jersey.

Caledonia Mining starts direct sales of gold from Zimbabwe

Caledonia Mining has started the direct sale of gold produced from the Blanket Mine to a refiner outside Zimbabwe. Unrefined gold continues to be processed at Fidelity Gold Refinery (FGR), a subsidiary of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, on a toll-treatment basis under the country's requirements for in-country refining and to allow full visibility over the gold it produces and exports.

Caledonia Mining's Blanket mine should return to production of around 20,000oz of gold in the next quarter, according to house broker Liberum, which has nonetheless reduced its price target to 1,102p from 1,225p. That reflects the removal of oxide production guidance for the newly acquired Bilboes project in Zimbabwe, though total guidance for the year was unchanged at 75-80,000oz.

(Kitco News) - On Monday, Zimbabwe-focused gold producer Caledonia Mining (NYSE: CMCL) announced Q1 2023 gold production of 16,036 ounces from its Blanket mine, 13% lower than the 18,515 ounces produced in Q1 2022.

Caledonia Mining said mechanical breakdowns and some logistical issues had affected production in 2023's first quarter, though April so far had been better than expected. Output from the Blanket Mine in Zimbabwe was 16,036 ounces in the three months to end March, compared to 18,515oz a year earlier.

Expect more mergers and acquisitions among the listed gold miners, says broker Liberum, with attention now likely turn towards mid-sized producers such as Caledonia and Shanta Gold. A rash of takeovers has broken out among the giants such as Newmont/Newcrest, Yamana/ Agnico but the spotlight is now likely to move down the chain reckons the broker.
